I’ll admit: I’ve never been to India. But as someone with multiple Indian friends who’s spent ample time in the Arabian Gulf (where there is a huge Indian diaspora) I’ve arguably been as close as you can get to the ‘Motherland’ without setting foot there. All this to say that I know what properly cooked Indian food tastes like. I came here on the recommendation of a friend with a similar connection to Indian cuisine. As such, I allowed myself to dream and hope that I would finally find a place to do my childhood memories justice and quench my gastronomic nostalgia — a folly that has hitherto too often come back to haunt me in Europe given the propensity to whitewash flavors in accordance with the bland desires of the European palet. Alas, it was only mid-feast that I realized I’d mixed up Dohány Utca with Dob Utca and that Shalimar not here was the restaurant my friend so strongly recommended. Boy, has a better mistake never been made. The food was absolutely stunning, rich with the flavor and requisite heat that I had come to love in years past. I believe we had the paneer tikka masala, butter chicken, garlic naan, vegetable yoghurt, and sides of saffron, and onion rice. Divine. Oh, and of course a mango lassi too that was out of this world. I can only recommend this place for anyone looking to as close to an authentic experience of a part of India’s vast cuisine as possible. Fairly priced too considering the ingredients.
Loved the experience. The amazing ambience and service coupled with delicious food makes one want to visit regularly. The home delivery is equally satisfying and have ordered several dishes on various occasions. Highly recommend
