Matthias Fountain is one of the most beautiful sculptures and fountains in Budapest. The Fountain is in the Buda Castle on the Hunyadi Court, featuring King Matthias in a royal hunting scene with a hidden love story. The story of Matthias Fountain, this amazingly ornate, beautifully crafted sculpture, is a sad, poignant love story, symbolising the human heart’s, never ending hunting story for happiness. According to the legend, King Matthias Hunyadi, the fairest king of Hungary, went hunting in disguise. He was often disguised to see the true affairs of the Hungarian Kingdom. During the hunting, he met a pretty peasant girl called Beautiful Little Helen (Szep Ilonka in Hungarian). They fell in love at first sight, but when she found out that he was the king of Hungary, she realised that their love could never come complete, and consummated in a marriage, so she died from a broken heart. We were delighted with the beauty of the characters and the design of the whole fountain that is telling an interesting story. Wonderfully.

Also dubbed as “Trevi Fountain of Budapest” the Mathais fountain s a famous fountain in the courtyard of the royal palace in Buda Castle. It depicts a hunting scene where in King Matthias standing on a dead stag with a cross bow after a successful hunting expedition. There are various statues on the fountain of which the one at the King Mathias’s left side carries a significance. It is the statue of Ilonka. Legend has it she died of a heart break (she fell in love with the king when he was hunting incognito, but broke her heart when she realised he was the King)! She holds a dear gently. Unfortunately the fountain seems to be out of order! There’s no information posted at the site too!

Story : the first king of Hungary stands with his deer. You can see to the right hand side the partner of the king grieving for the deer. Several hounds and a man blowing a horn are present showing the effort of the hunt. Other note: meant to be similar to the Trevi fountain and fountains four waterfalls (can you spot them all). Located in the castle grounds.

The Matthias Fountain built in the western forecourt of Buda Palace was built in Neo-Baroque style and was inaugurated in 1904. The statuary group depicts a hunting party led by Matthias Corvinus, the king of Hungary. Sometimes is compared with Trevi Fountain in Rome.
