For a few thousands is place in the night care, others find shelter on the streets, in the woods and in old ruin buildings. Homeless have a reputation for being bad people and for both choosing to be homeless and wanting to stay on the streets. However, reality is that most of those people are victims of domestic violence, job loss, the steadily increasing costs of rent, etc. At times the homeless situation can be very frustrating and complicated. From mental issues to addictions, trust issues, depression and anxiety to medical problems, lost ID’s, broken promises and just a pure lack of progress or change, make things incredible difficult for everyone, to not only handle the situation but also find solid motivation to press forward. The core of what truly needed is quite simple, Shelter. The idea of the “housing first model” is that providing homes to homeless will help stabilize them so their problems can be treated. But even this forward-thinking policy missing one key element of what people need to live a good life: a social life, things to do and contribute to society. We the Dutch foundation Embrace and Hungarian partners want to establish a tiny house community in Budapest together with a resocialization program. Because building new houses renovating existing houses is very expensive, we must look to alternative ways to solve the problem. A realistic affordable solution can be found in creating a “tiny houses community”. This means to develop and build tiny houses form about 6 m² at the cost of € 1.950, to provide a warm, dry and save sleeping place. And there will be a common building with a kitchen, bathing facilities, education rooms and so on. From here the people can start their resocialization, learning, finding a job and move on to an own house in the long term.
